Crunchyroll Manga Service to Close on December 11 - Learn about the closure and its impact on manga readers with Peak Fiction.
In a statement to Anime News Network, Crunchyroll has announced that it will be shutting down its Crunchyroll Manga service on December 11, 2023. The company cited a desire to "provide fans with the best experiences surrounding their favorite series" as the reason for the shutdown.
The Crunchyroll Manga service was launched in October 2013 and offered a wide variety of manga titles from Kodansha USA Publishing, among other publishers. However, the service began to lose titles in 2018, when Kodansha USA Publishing removed a number of its titles from the platform. In 2023, Kodansha Ltd. launched its own manga distribution service, K MANGA, in the United States.
In its statement, Crunchyroll also announced that it will be expanding its Crunchyroll Store to include over 17,000 manga titles across genres. Additionally, Crunchyroll Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan members will still have access to the Crunchyroll Game Vault, which includes a growing catalog of free-to-play titles for iOS and Android.
"We want to assure you that this is not the end of our journey together," Crunchyroll said in its statement. They said,
"We are constantly working on bringing you more content and products to enhance your anime experience. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to providing you with even more exciting experiences in the future!"
The shutdown of Crunchyroll Manga is a blow to manga fans, but it is also a sign of the changing landscape of the manga industry. With more publishers launching their own manga distribution services, it is becoming more difficult for third-party platforms like Crunchyroll to compete.
It remains to be seen how Crunchyroll's shutdown will impact the manga industry as a whole. However, it is clear that the industry is in a state of flux, and fans should be prepared for further changes in the coming years.
